We were excited to catch some time with one of the company’s founding members, Jenn Margolin, to explore what it really means to build truly strong communities the old-fashioned way with refreshing energy.


How is LabCreatrix different?

As well, we practice meditation as a team.  And we are grateful to be able to include our WeWork community in our meditation.  It is empowering to have a community behind you that shares similar values and daily tools.  And we share what we've learned through an email newsletter that we send out to our LabCreatrix community members as well."  


When do you think of your best ideas?

"My most valuable ideas often come in the quiet moments, usually towards the end of the day.  When I was a chef, I found creativity in reading a recipe or tasting something new, something exciting. This would inspiring new dishes, new combinations, or pairings.  The process ultimately isn't too different at LabCreatrix.  But rather than a recipe or tasting, I find inspiration in conversations and interaction.  Whether it be with my coworkers or my clients, I have learned to become a sponge, absorbing as much information as possible and then allowing the time needed to thoroughly process that information.  I have to deeply understand the problem and context before I can come to an out-of-the-box solution."

What do you stand for?

"We stand for building communities in-person.  Today, we are all connected digitally.  Whether it be by email, phone or social media.  We are all just a click away.  But how do you truly understand a person's goals, their strengths and weaknesses, their vision, over the internet?  In corporate recruiting, it is so important to that we make this process personal.  We are only doing our job if both the client and the talent are happy in the long-term.  We are proud to be community builders."


What’s your best advice to fellow startup founders?

"Find a team of people who you would actually want to live with.  We look at the people we work with as our family members.  It is a truly great feeling to know you are cared about when you walk into your office.  As a family, you may scream and throw dishes. But at the end of the day, the only thing left is respect and love for your family members and a strengthened bond.  ”

What Do You Stand For? A Day With Cyant

Our team spent the day with Cyant, an innovative 3D printing team based out of WeWork that is committed to bridging the gap between art and technology for youth across the globe. We were excited to catch some time with the company’s founder, Barbara Hanna, to explore what it really means to empower youth at the intersection of art and technology.


What inspired you to follow your passion?

“I have a technical background. So when I started, I was representing one woman. A woman in tech. But I knew that if I was able create the connection between art and technology, I would be able to establish opportunities for both men and women, young and old. Art has no boundaries, it does not discriminate by age or gender. People of all backgrounds and ages are all of a sudden a part of the conversation. I knew that this was where we could learn so much.”

Who does Cyant help?

“3D printing is truly changing the way we think about making things. This is the very technology that our youth will explore and grow up with. We need to take responsibility for how we encourage kids to use these new technologies. If we don’t teach them early on how to take a responsible and sustainable approach, this technology simply won’t reach it’s potential as a truly useful asset. It’s up to us to lay the foundation, the mindset, for our children. We’ve realized that this establishes opportunities beyond youth and students - soon we will test the Cyant model as a team-building tool for companies and professionals. Art may be used as a bonding and collaborative tool, even within the competitive professional world.”

What’s your best advice to fellow startup founders?

“Most will tell you to speed up. But it takes time to know your customers. It takes time to understand your place in the market. There’s no formula and every entrepreneur and every new business is different. So don’t get obsessed with accelerating too quickly. Take your time. Own the process.”

“As a solo founder, WeWork has been crucial for me. It has been a support structure, a sounding board, a like-minded community of entrepreneurs. WeWork provided a designated work space completely separate from my home. Once I moved into WeWork, I was finally able to treat my passion like a job.”

What does it mean to be healthy?

“To be healthy means to be connected. As an entrepreneur, your brain is always working. It’s important to be aware of what else is in your environment that can help you. To be open to what’s happening around you. You can’t be healthy when you’re closed.”

When do you think of your best ideas?

“I think of my best ideas when I allow myself to relax - relax enough to feel fully connected to my environment.  These days, I don’t have as many opportunities to feel connected.  The longer I do this, the more important this time becomes.  Not just down time, but off time.”

A Lesson in Listening: How Crowdfunding Teaches Founders the Most Important Skill of All

I used to think it was all about the money.

From smart watches to designer lamps, seemingly every industry has adopted the multitude of crowdfunding portals in an effort to raise the necessary funds to magically take ideas from prototypes to production in a matter of months.

Money and exposure for anyone with an idea? Seems like crowdfunding would be a no-brainer for any bootstrapped visionary.

There are three main reasons why aspiring entrepreneurs ultimately decide to take their creative ideas to the crowd:

  1. Raise Funds
    “Without money, we won’t be able to manufacture this product and bring our dream to life.”
  2. Gain Exposure
    “We can definitely use the money, but getting the word out there is our main focus.”
  3. Get Market Validation
    “We need to confirm that people actually want this product and are willing to buy it at this price point.”

Now it’s obvious that a successful campaign can actually achieve all three of these goals. But let’s look more closely at, in my opinion, the most important one: Get Market Validation.

If you launch a crowdfunding campaign, you are going to undoubtedly get acrash course in listening. Yes, listening is an art form and most founders suck at it. Whether you like it or not, your backers and skeptics are going to provide you with both tremendously helpful suggestions and utterly unproductive feedback. And you’re going to have to take a breath and listen to every single word of it.

Although I have been involved in several prior crowdfunding ventures, I recently launched my very own Kickstarter campaign for StorkStand, an affordable standing desk that actually fits in a handbag. Having hit nearly 50% of our goal in the first week, I have been more than overwhelmed with gratitude and appreciation for our supporters. However, as much as my spirits have been uplifted by the support we have received thus far, so too has my ability to listen been tested.

From prototype feedback sessions with some of our earliest supporters to late-night phone calls with international customers, I have learned and re-learned how to listen more passionately and effectively in a few short weeks than I ever thought possible.

It isn’t easy — re-learning how to listen is a process that undoubtedly requires a founder to completely detach him or herself from the very product into which they have painstakingly put their sweat and tears.

But it is more than worth it.

I have come to realize that one significant sign of a truly great leader is his or her ability to fully and passionately listen to others. At some point, we must recognize that we’re not all Steve Jobs, a visionary of such esteem that he rarely, if ever, pursued feedback from his customers. And because most of us are not Steve Jobs, we must proactively and continuously seek feedback from our customers and listen more intently than ever before. Regardless of his or her ability to stand up and inspire others, a true leader has taken time to master the art of listening (or in some cases, the art of making others feel like they’re being listened to). And crowdfunding has become a crash course in this very art form.

Whether you choose Kickstarter, Indiegogo or any of the other crowdfunding platforms out there, the experience of running a campaign forces you to be extraordinarily vulnerable while welcoming feedback from your customers, supporters and skeptics alike.

At StorkStand, we constantly remind ourselves that our goal is to build a product and business that truly is of value to our customers, in the short and long run. Therefore, we don’t solely look at our Kickstarter campaign as a way to raise funds to manufacture StorkStand. We also look at it as a thirty-day period of passionate and proactive listening when we can truly test all those hypotheses we had previously constructed about our customers and their needs. In other words, because our crowdfunding campaign is simply a necessary step in our long-term process, we are able to fully listen to and process suggestions and criticisms in a much more productive way.

If you’re considering crowdfunding for your next big idea, consider what is most important to your team’s long-term success. Whether you’re after the money or the exposure, get ready to start listening.

Things to Think About While Sitting

  1. My chair is vertically adjustable and on a five-point base — a supportive foundation is a critical first step to a healthy workspace.
  2. My chair has an adjustable lumbar (lower back) support — avoid a hunched or over-extended posture.
  3. When seated, my knees are not higher than my hips — keep those hips open and engaged.
  4. My feet rest flat on the floor or are supported by a stable footrest — congrats, you’ve graduated from the kiddy table!
  5. I do not sit continuously for more than 1 hour at a time — sitting is killing us and making us stupider — get off your butt!

Things to Think About While Standing

  1. I have a standing or upright desk available to me — many companies have started to really invest in their employees’ health and offer standing desk options. A simple, affordable (and shareable) solution will work just fine.
  2. If a standing desk is not available to me, I have asked my company to provide a standing desk option. Many insurance policies actually cover health-related office tools like standing desks—so don’t be shy about asking your HR department or office manager about available desk options.   3. My standing desk is height-adjustable and accommodates my personal preferences — everyone is different, so start slow and don’t feel the need to invest in a bulky, expensive option right off the bat.
  4. My standing desk is not my only workstation option — we all get tired of standing sometimes, make sure you can sit when and where you want.


General Mobility and Health 

  1. I acknowledge that we are neither meant to sit nor stand for long durations of time throughout our workday—James Levine of the Mayo Clinic offers lots of helpful studies that will build your awareness and make you sound smart.
  2. I take multiple walks throughout my workday — your body is meant to move!
  3. I avoid sitting at my desk while eating lunch — Huffington Post says it will increase your stress levels and decrease your creativity.
  4. I drink at least ½ my body weight in ounces of water each day — a person who weighs 180 lbs should drink at least 90 oz of water each day.
  5. I stretch at least once per day — although we highly suggest you stand up and stretch, here is a stretching routine you can even do at your desk.

It isn’t some new coding language or iPhone app for your dog.
Standing isn’t exciting; it’s simply something we do when we aren’t moving or sitting.

The act of standing might not be particularly interesting, but when andwhere we choose to stand is actually an intriguing topic.

Studies show that most Americans sit at work for more than 7.5 hours every day. That’s more than double the doctor recommended daily amount and is proven to contribute to diabetes, weight gain and heart failure. But thankfully, someone invented a solution to this epidemic: the standing desk.

Of course! A simple contraption that allows you to stand while you work, consequently boosting health and productivity throughout your workday—seems pretty intuitive, right? The truth is, making the transition from sitting to standing at work can be a little daunting and there are many different ways to approach your first time using a standing desk.

Here are four essential tips for every standing desk newbie:

1. It takes time to adjust

The number one thing you need to remember is that it takes time to get used to standing while you work. That’s right. Over the last several years you have successfully trained your body to sit for hours upon hours each day. Now it’s time to retrain it.

Set realistic expectations and allow your body several days (even weeks) to adjust to standing. Patience is key to a healthy workspace!

2. Start out slow

The number one complaint I hear from standing desk newbies is that they get tired after only a couple hours of standing. So I tell them to sit down!

Start out by standing just an hour or two each day. See how you feel and then increase the time you stand every few days. Give your body sufficient time to adjust and the whole experience will be much more enjoyable and sustainable in the long run.

3. Stretch before you stand

You’re going to be using muscles you’ve never used before. Just like you would before you hit the gym, take a few minutes to warm up your legs and back muscles — back bends, quad and calf stretches, maybe even some downward dog?

Whatever stretches make you feel good, do ‘em! (as long as they’re appropriate for the office)

4. Listen to your body

Every single person’s body is different. That means there is no optimal amount of time we should all stand each day or perfect type of desk we should all use. Ultimately, it’s about listening to what your body is telling you and finding the right solution for you.
